Waverly Coffee Shop

The Waverly is a classic West Village diner, with photos of unknown celebrities lining the walls. In the small restaurant, the smoking section effectively permeates the whole place.

The Waverly is actually one of the few downtown diners, and it's pretty good. You may have to wait a while for a booth, or even a seat at the counter, and the service can be mindbogglingly slow, but the food is good. Of especial note, and the only dish I get, is the Waverly Melt, an artery-clogging delight. The Waverly Melt is a cheeseburger with sauteed onions on grilled white bread. Or, it's a grilled cheese sandwich with a burger inside. Your mouth can't decide. Is it grilled cheese? Is it cheeseburger? It's both. The Waverly Melt Deluxe gives you the Waverly Melt, a hugs side of thick cut, crispy fries, an onion ring or two, a pickle, lettuce and tomato, and a little paper cup of cole slaw of questionable provenance. A feast for a king. Their shakes and floats are very good, as well
