The food was not the issue. We were a party of 2. The table next to us also was. The guests (who happened to be foreign--and spoke another language) received a 15% gratuity on their bill. After we informed the 2 men at the table that this was uncommon, they asked the waiter about the charge, who informed them it was common practice on all bills. We (being two Americans) recieved no included gratuity on our bill. After confronting the management staff on our way out about this issue, the staff not only didn't apologize for their actions, but DEFENDED the practice of including a gratuity for international patrons-- claiming that internationals occasionally only leave "25 cents."
Lunch price-fixe is an amazing deal6 / 10

I just caught the tail end of their price-fixe lunch time one Saturday afternoon and caught an amazing deal--an under ten-dollar meal that delivered a soup, salad, and entree, (as well as very good bread) plus coffee or tea to follow. I chose their freshly ground hamburger for the entree, and it was unbelievably good--intensely flavorful, tender and moist, served slightly goofily on fresh foccacia. A marvelous and surprising deal. Other entrees, including the standard penne with tomato and fresh mozzarella sauce, was rich and well-prepared. All the servings were much larger than one would expect for a lunch menu. I haven't tried dinner there yet, but it's a safe bet that it will be equally good.
